Understanding SEO?
SEO is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s unpaid results.
Whats important to understand about Search Engine Optimization (SEO) on Google?
1. Google will rank your website according to their rules... their rules keep changing so that no one completely understands them! And of course they don’t want you or anyone to fully understand them regardless of what other people might claim.
Q. Why is this?
ANS. Because adwords is how Google earns its income, they want you to pay them for your website to rank higher on google.
2. Some years ago Google changed how they store your searches on Google, so that when you search on one PC, phone, laptop you will not necessarily get the same results on another PC, what you get will depends on what each PC has been searching this is because they want to customize the results for each user.
Friendly listing URLs
User friendly listing URL links (automatic)
The URL of a page is the address displayed in the Address bar on your browser.
Your OSL website automatically displays user friendly URL’s for your listings.
- The URL for a Listing will display the listing type + Address + Suburb + Listing ID
- Listing page titles (automatic) Listings appear in a browser with mouse over balloon description of the listing. Address + Suburb
- Alt and title tags for images (automatic) This means that visitors will see the listing address and salespersons name when they mouseover an image
Note. The Address displayed in the URL is the address display option that you have chosen for each listing.
e.g. if you choose not to display the address then the URL would be: listing type + Suburb + Listing ID
- Google Tag Manager ID - If you are using Google Tag manager enter the ID here.
- Google Analytics' - Your Google analytics' number is displayed here
- Google API key - If you want to use Google maps on your website, you need to turn on and add your google API key
Go to the Google Cloud Platform Console and sign in using your company or owner Gmail account.
You must use a Gmail email account
- Go to the Google Cloud Platform Console.
- Select the project for which you want to add an API key.
- Go to the Credentials page.
- (From the Navigation menu click APIs & Services > Credentials.)
- Click Create credentials > API key.
- The API key created dialog displays your newly created API key.
- Click Restrict Key. (If you click Close, you can still set up restrictions later.)
- On the API key page, under Key restrictions, set the Application restrictions.
- Select HTTP referrers (web sites).
- Add the referrers (follow the instructions).
- Click Save.
- Copy the key to the Google API box and save.
Google PageSpeed - You need to be careful about taking Google Page Speed result to literally, and you need to know how to read them. It is best to use them as a part of your overall website health.

Homepage URL
This greatly helps search engines in knowing which page is your ‘true’ home page, and thus improves search results.
Meta Keywords
Not as important as not used by many search engines since it is highly susceptible to spam and users never see it.
Should consist of a couple of the main keywords used to describe that page.
Meta Description
Somewhat Important: Some search engines use the meta description tag in their search results. Good meta description tags can help improve your click through rate.

Sitemaps
Showing sitemap links on your website makes it easier for the search engines to index your website.
You can select from a number of SEO sitemap options for your website
Q. Why do you want your website to be indexed?
ANS. Because it will make your website easier to find on the internet.
You can test out some of these sitemap options and then open your home page Refresh and decide if you want to use on your website.
- Website sitemap link - This will display a sitemap link in the footer section of your website.
- Sitemap details - This will show a full list of the pages on your website on your home page
- Listing type sitemap - This option will display a link for each of the listing types that you have on your website
- Location sitemap - This option will display a link for each of the Suburbs that you have listing in on your website
- Industry sitemap - Business website only
- Region sitemap - Business website only
